All change at Daily Mail, including new chief sports reporter Matt Hughes

All change at the Daily Mail as head of sport Marc Padgett makes a series of new appointments.

The imminent arrival of The Athletic has had a knock-on effect on The Mail, Times and Guardian leaving gaps on all three papers.

As a result, Matt Hughes is to move from The Times to The Mail as chief sports reporter with four-time SJA sports reporter of the year, Matt Lawton, going the other way.

Evening Standard’s Tom Collomosse replaces Midlands footballer reporter Laurie Whitwell, who is bound for The Athletic with colleagues Laura Williamson, Adam Crafton and sports desk secretary Hannah Eades.

Daniel Matthews, SJA young sports writer of the year, leaves the online desk to become a general London reporter.

Ben Winstanley returns from The Standard as assistant sports editor. Bob Treasure replaces Times-bound James Restall as sports news editor and Nicole Wilmshurst will be the new sports desk secretary.

Riath Al-Samarrai has been promoted to chief sports feature writer. Ian Herbert is now deputy chief sports writer.

Mike Keegan has taken over the Sports Agenda column from executive sports news editor Williamson.

Padgett said: “The Mail sports desk has been backed all the way by editor Geordie Greig and is still looking to further bolster its award-winning team despite the recent turbulence in the industry.”
