There are some familiar names in the shortlists for the 2019 SJA British Sports Journalism photography awards, sponsored by The National Lottery and Canon and released today.
Getty’s Clive Mason, 2002 photographer of the year and multi-award-winner in other categories, is named in the Canon Sports Portfolio and Specialist Portfolio categories. Mason was Canon Sports Portfolio winner in 2017.
Edward Whitaker, sports photographer of the year in 2008 and 2011, is on the shortlist for specialist portfolio and also in the category of away from the action.
Last year’s winner of that category was freelance Eddie Keogh, who has also twice won sports news picture and sports portfolio.
The winners for 2019 will be revealed on Monday February 24 at the Westminster Bridge Park Plaza Hotel, hosted by Jim Rosenthal. We received an amazing 307 entries across all categories, 1975 images in total, which made it a marathon task for our judges.
Partners Canon are sponsoring two categories as well as the exhibition which showcases the amazing images produced by the nation’s best photographers. All the shortlisted entries will be on display.
The Ed Lacey Trophy for SJA Canon Sports Photographer of the year is awarded to the overall best sports photographer of 2019 who has demonstrated an outstanding range of photographic skills.
This will be judged on submitted entries into the categories listed below. All other awards are subject to entered submissions which are then put before our panel of judges.
There is a new chair of judges this year, Matthew Fearn (pictured above, left) of the Daily and Sunday Telegraph.
