New SJA photographer of the year Mark Thompson of Getty Images won two categories at the British Sports Journalism photography awards sponsored by Canon on Monday night – specialist sports portfolio for his work on the F1 scene and sports picture for the dramatic crash involving Fernando Alonso.

More than 600 guests were at the Westminster Bridge Park Plaza to see the creme-de-la-creme of writers, photographers and broadcasters receive journalism’s ‘Oscars’.
