The Rugby Union Writers’ Club has elected a woman to be its chair for the first time in its history.
Sarah Mockford, the deputy editor of Rugby World magazine, was elected at the RUWC’s annual meeting at Twickenham on Saturday.
Mockford succeeds Alex Lowe of The Times after a two-year stint as vice-chair, during which she has been to the fore in the sub-committee organising the RUWC’s annual dinner.
Rob Kitson of The Guardian becomes vice-chairman, while David Hands, Chris Jones, Hugh Godwin and Sara Orchard remain in the offices of president, treasurer, secretary and assistant secretary respectively.
“In breaking new ground, it feels like nothing more or less than a natural development for the Rugby Writers who have twice voted a woman as their Personality of the Year,” Godwin told sportsjournalists.co.uk.
“Everyone in the club congratulates ‘Mockers’ and wishes her all the best for the next two years.”
