Time for tee: SJA Golf Day May 5

The Sports Journalists’ Association’s first Golf Day of 2009 is to be staged at Surrey Downs GC on May 5, and members and guests are requested to book their places now.

The cost of the day’s round, plus pre-round coffee and bacon rolls and two-course lunch, is expected to be around £50.

Regular SJA golfers should note that the spring Golf Day is on a Tuesday, following the May Bank Holiday, since many of our golfers are so involved with other golf days from March to May that it has been impossible to find another suitable Monday.

The Alliss-designed Surrey Downs GC is situated between the more established Chipstead and Kingsdown GCs, not far from Walton Heath. Those who played there three years ago probably only remember the outward nine holes – the constant, torrential downpour that day saw almost all of even our boldest players squelch back into the clubhouse. This year, we hope for kinder weather to allow our hacks and hackers to sample the full 18 holes.

Tee-off time will be 10am. Usual format: 3-ball stableford, prizes for SJA and guests – who are very welcome – plus nearest the pin and longest drive plus the usual fun prizes.

Please book your place on the 1st tee by emailing Paul Trow.
