Tench takes the bait to join Sunday Times

Matt Tench, just a handful of weeks after leaving the Independent as part of its wide-ranging redundancy scheme, has joined the Sunday Times as deputy sports editor.

Tench, who was at the Independent for nearly five years, ultimately as head of sport for the daily and Sunday papers, following spells as sports editor at the Daily Mail and as a very successful launch editor of Observer Sport Monthly, started in his new role last week, a move which Wapping insiders suggest came as something of an unannounced surprise.

The appointment comes shortly after Wapping suffered its own round of lay offs, including the loss of a senior production journalist on the Sunday Times sports pages in Scotland, and with long-serving football correspondent Joe Lovejoy being made redundant.

Nick Greenslade, who had been deputy to sports editor Alex Butler, is now designated “deputy sports editor (regions)”, in charge of the Scottish, Irish and Welsh sports pages.

The appointment represents a return to former pastures for Tench, who was briefly deputy sport editor at the Sunday Times seven years ago.

No one at the Sunday Times sports department was available to comment.
