SJA Cricket Day: Surrey v Essex, May 20

Join other SJA members for a day's cricket next week

Come along to join at least one former chairman of the SJA at an informal Cricket Day on Friday May 20.

This is a low-key social event to meet other sports journalists and catch-up with old friends in a relaxed environment in the midst of some top-class(-ish) sport, as Surrey host Essex on the third day of their County Championship match being staged at Whitgift School, South Croydon.

Immediate past chairman Peter Wilson, a Surrey CCC member, will be taking up his customary position on the boundary at the Brighton Road End of the picturesque ground, while Essex lads Ian Cole and Trevor Bond may also be making special guest appearances.

We are not booking any corporate hostility facilities this year. SJA members (and non-members) will need to buy their own ticket on the gate (£10), and gather by the beer tent (where else?) by about 10.45am, before taking up positions for the day’s play, when the likes of Ashes heroes Kevin Pietersen and Alistair Cook could be playing.

The venue has facilities for fast food lunches and refreshments during the day, unless you prefer to bring your own picnic.

There is car parking on the ground and in the roads nearby. The ground is well served by public transport: the nearest railway station is South Croydon, a five-minute walk away. East Croydon station a bus ride away is served by trains from London Bridge, Charing Cross and Waterloo, Clapham Junction, Kings Cross, Watford and all places north. West Croydon station is on the London Overground/East London Line. Tramlink runs from Wimbledon and Beckenham.
