SJA members Jon Colman and David Powell dominated the sports prizes at today’s Regional Press Awards in London, between them winning the daily and the weekly sportswriter categories.
Powell, the former Times athletics correspondent, now writes a weekly column for his local paper near his new home, the North Devon Journal.
Carlisle-based Colman, a past winner of the SJA’s Regional Sportswriter Award, today was runner-up to Powell in the weekly category, but won the daily sportswriter category for his work on the News & Star.
The awards are run by the Society of Editors, in partnership with HoldtheFrontPage, the Newspaper Society, the Press Association and the Journalists’ Charity, with the ceremony being held today at London’s Park Plaza Riverbank.
Hosted by radio presenter Nick Ferrari, the awards coincide with the Newspaper Society AGM and Local Newspaper Week 2011.
