Heather Williams, the performance director for British Triathlon, is available for phone interview on Tuesday, August 21, between 10am and noon, to discuss the team selections and outlook for the world championships to be staged in Hamburg from August 31 to September 2.
The Corus-sponsored British Triathlon team was announced today and includes at least 16 representatives across a range of levels, from junior to senior, with the men’s world champion, Tim Don and the junior men’s world champion, Alistair Brownlee, both defending the titles that they won in Lausanne last year.
Having suffered a foot injury at the start of the year, Don is returning to form with a fourth place finish at the Salford World Cup and wins at the London Triathlon and Corus Elite Series race in Hyde Park. Also in the men’s race, Will Clarke, having convincingly won both the European and World under-23 titles in 2006, steps up to his first senior championship competition.
Brownlee, aged 19, from Leeds, with be racing alongside his 17-year-old brother Jonathan in Hamburg, and is a strong favourite in the junior men’s race. Alistair Brownlee is one of four under-23 and junior athletes – the others being Hollie Avil, Ritchie Nicholls and Rosie Clarke – who won European gold medals earlier in the season.
British Triathlon Performance Director, Heather Williams, commented:
“I believe these are strong teams, indicative of the position of the Corus British Triathlon team just a year out from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. We have medal chances in all of the six races and, as at the European championships, will be looking to convert as many of those as possible. The athletes understand that and will be working closely together with each other and with their coaches to maximise their overall performance.â€
