Andy Murray: much in demand this month

Andy Murray may be the subject of much attention this month when the sporting awards for 2013 are presented–and the Lawn Tennis Writers’ Association was first to honour him at its annual lunch held at the All England Lawn Tennis Club at Wimbledon.

Not that the LTWA could persuade Murray to be back at the scene of his triumph in July, when he became the first British winner of the Wimbledon men’s singles title since Fred Perry 77 years earlier.

LTWA chairman David Mercer acknowledged Murray’s feat in a filmed interview and presentation carried out before the champion took off for warm weather training in Miami.

Murray set the tone for the lunch with his memories of his year – and his mother Judy joined in by outbidding other diners to collect one of her son’s shirts, signed and framed.

The LTWA international award went to former women’s champion Billie Jean King.
