NICK CHERRIE reports from north London on a golf tournament more hotly contested than the Walker Cup…

Gerry Cox is 2015 winner of the Phil Sheldon Trophy after storming home in the SJA Autumn Golf Day at Muswell Hill.

Cox is a big fan of this north London course, having won here in 2013.

After handing this trophy last year to Pat Mooney, Cox grabbed back the title in some style.

He shot a staggering 41 Stableford points playing off his handicap of 24. Call the Secretary!

Some score, especially as the heavens had opened at 5am that morning and there was plenty of doubt over whether the course would be playable.

Cox, the co-owner of Hayters sports news agency, finished four points clear of Muswell Hillbilly Paul Trow (37 – that’s points, not his age) and a further point ahead of defending champion Mooney.

Daily Mirror Sport’s Kevin Price defended his guests’ title with a toiling 35 points.

To the victors the spoils, and our thanks go to Phil Sheldon’s widow Gill for being on hand to do the honours with the prize presentations.

All in all, a cracking day out – bring on the Spring meeting in 2016.
