Malyon, 27, was deputy sports editor at the Daily Mirror and has spent the last year in Madrid as European football correspondent for the paper.

His journey to national newspapers has come via a background in writing for betting companies like Betfair and Unibet while he also reported on Argentine football for FourFourTwo magazine.

Malyon studied Spanish and Portuguese at Manchester University. He first worked for Trinity Mirror in 2011 as a freelance, specialising in video content and the paper’s apps for online.

His first task as sports editor of the newly digital-only Independent will be to find a chief football correspondent to replace Mark Ogden, who moved to ESPN in the autumn.
