Sir Andrew Foster, Chairman of Commonwealth Games England, today announced that Craig Hunter, one of England’s most experienced Olympic and Commonwealth Games sports team managers, has been chosen as Team England’s Chef de Mission for Delhi 2010.
Hunter, who managed England’s swimmers at their successful Commonwealth Games of 2002 and 2006 will also be able to draw on his experience of team management at the Olympic Games with swimming.
The Founding Director of an award-winning international business consultancy, Hunter will have a role at the Games which includes representing England in sports, political and commercial settings.
He takes up his role with immediate effect and said: “This is an exciting opportunity to lead Team England in the potentially challenging but stimulating environment of Delhi 2010. I know that this is a significant moment for English sport as the nation’s athletes move towards a home Olympic Games in 2012. The experience that English athletes will gain in Delhi will be extremely important and, at Team England, we must ensure that they have the best platform for successâ€.
Sir Andrew said: “We are delighted to welcome Craig on board. His experience of both sport and business is just what we need and we are sure that he will create the right impact for Team Englandâ€.
Hunter’s appointment coincides with the imminent recruitment of CGE Board posts, which are the result of open advertisement for the first time. Both developments are part of the CGE modernisation process instigated by Sir Andrew who was appointed as CGE Chairman in October 2007.
Within swimming, Hunter has been a well-respected manager by the swimmers. He is a good motivator and influencer but is also an effective committee man and has a strong analytical, technical and strategic background.
The 2010 Commonwealth Games take place in Delhi, India, from 3 to 14 October 2010. It will feature 17 sports – archery, aquatics (swimming, synchronised swimming & diving), athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, rugby 7s, shooting, squash, table tennis, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling.
Commonwealth Games England is the organisation responsible for selecting and organising England’s team at the Commonwealth Games. At the last Games, held in Melbourne in 2006, Team England were second only to hosts Australia on the medal table winning 36 gold, 40 silver and 34 bronze medals.
