Davies booked for Boat Race commentary

From Guardian.co.uk
Four years after he last commentated on the Boat Race for the BBC, Barry Davies is to return to the historic annual contest between Oxford and Cambridge with London talk station LBC.

Davies was the BBC’s Boat Race commentator for 11 years until 2004, when the TV rights to the race were snapped up by ITV.

“I am very grateful for the chance to be involved again in a very special event which means a lot to me and to be offered the new challenge of radio commentary,” said Davies.

LBC won a Sony gold award for its coverage of the event two years ago. It takes place on Saturday March 29.

The LBC 97.3 programme director, Jonathan Richards, said: “Barry Davies is a sports broadcasting legend so I’m delighted he’s joining our award-winning team, making our own Boat Race crew a winning combination.”

In a broadcasting career that has spanned more than 40 years, Davies has covered 10 World Cup finals, 10 summer Olympics and more than 20 Wimbledon tennis championships. He also spent 35 years working on the BBC’s Match of the Day.

Cambridge, which won last year’s race after two successive Oxford victories, has won the race a total of 79 times to Oxford’s 73. There has been one dead heat.
