Sun and Times retain online Sky Premier rights

Rupert Murdoch’s News UK has renewed its deal with Sky Sports – part of Sky plc in which the Murdoch empire has a 39 per cent share – to provide online subscribers with near-live highlights of Premier League football.

sky sports logoNews UK has been showing these highlights behind the paywalls of The Times, Sunday Times and The Sun since the beginning of the 2013-2014 season when it signed a three-year deal. A new three-year deal with Sky Sports starts from 2016-17.

News UK chief executive Mike Darcey said: “It was a competitive process with lots of interest from across the industry, which is testament to the innovation displayed by, and intuitive marketing campaigns created by, teams at News UK since first winning the rights in 2013. This new partnership with Sky Sports will undoubtedly bring a better product to market for our customers.”

Barney Francis, Sky Sports managing director, said: “The way people watch sport is changing rapidly and this agreement ensures Sky Sports will continue to offer the best coverage across TV, mobile, online and social media.

“However they choose to watch, our customers will have all the defining moments from the Premier League at their fingertips for years to come.”
