Michael Brennan’s brilliant ‘boxers and rockers’ photography exhibition hits the spot

By PATRICK COLLINS

Sports writers of a certain vintage will recall a punishing stream of long nights and hilarious days in the company of the brilliant sports photographer Michael (Mickey) Brennan.

A former British Photographer of the Year, Brennan was for several decades the first port of call for visitors to New York. The warmth of his welcome often obscured the quality of his work, and a selection of that work is now on show in London.

The exhibition features perhaps the most haunting portrait of Muhammad Ali —who became a good friend of Brennan — and a terrifying action shot of Mike Tyson.

Since the exhibition is called “Boxers and Rockers’, there are also memorable shots of Mick Jagger and Led Zeppelin. The venue is Iconic Images Gallery at 13a Park Walk, Chelsea SW10 0AJ, and it will run until October 2nd. Highly recommended.
