Stuart Hall, the octogenarian BBC sports broadcaster, is proving he can still turn a phrase on the written page after being short-listed as magazine Columnist of the Year by the PPA – the Periodical Publishers’ Association.

The former It’s a Knockout presenter, now 81, has been nominated for his work in the Radio Times (BBC Magazines) and will be going head-to-head with the likes of Q’s Billy Bragg, novelist Will Self and Sandi Toksvig at the most prestigious awards night in magazine publishing.

Cutting edge football mag, FourFourTwo (Haymarket), is up for International Consumer Magazine of the Year while Pro Cycling (Future), Runners World (NatMag-Rodale) and the British Journal of Photography (Incisive Media) are vying for the accolade of Specialist Consumer Magazine of the Year.

The British Journal of Photography’s Diane Smyth and Mick Moore are also short-listed for Writer of the Year and Designer of the Year respectively.

Other nominations include: Rob Aherne of Autosport (Haymarket) in the Publisher/Manager of the Year category, Autosport.com for Digital Product of the Year, and Motorcyle News (Bauer Media) for their Reclaim North Wales battle in Editorial Campaign of the Year.

The winners will be announced on June 15 at an awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel.
