Smith to retire after 48 years in the saddle

Alan Smith is to retire as equestrianism correspondent for the Daily Telegraph after 48 years.

The equestrian events staged in Hong Kong were the 10th consecutive summer Olympics covered by Smith, who between 1963 and 1997 also worked as the paper’s skiing correspondent, covering eight Winter Games.

“I think 48 years is long enough. Time I tried something different – I don’t want to get into a rut,” Smith, who is based in Oxfordshire, said.

An SJA member, Smith is a founder member and chairman of the British Equestrian Writers’ Association, but will stand down at the BEWA’s annual meeting later this year.
