ESPN’s Lomas goes solo to land top SJA golf prize

Mark Lomas of ESPN is making a habit of winning prizes at SJA Golf Days

The winner of the team prize with Charles Randall at Muswell Hill last September at our previous Golf Day, Mark Lomas went solo to win the SJA members’ medal and first prize in the sunshine of Surbiton Golf Club on Monday April 16.

Lomas, who plays off a handicap of 12, won the three-ball stableford competition with a superb score of 41 points. Before having to dash off to work and missing the prize-giving, he said: “I’m delighted to have won against such powerful opposition from all the players. It’s been a superb day, great weather and super company.”

Second was snapper David Jacobs with 38 points off 22 and third was 12-handicapper Tom Pilcher, of Thomson-Reuters Sport, playing in his first SJA competition. Pilcher also won the nearest-the-pin prize, hitting his tee shot at the short 13th to within six feet of the cup.

The guest winner was David Ofield (off a 24 handicap) with 35 points by a point from Richard Copeman (18) who was second on count-back from Chris Murphy.

Racing photographer Dan Abrahams received a special bottle of wine donated by recent Doug Gardner Trophy winner John Samuel for the longest drive. Lomas and Ofield each received three bottles of French wine kindly donated by SJA member Graham Morrison in addition to their winners’ medals.

On a day when traffic problems threatened to disrupt proceedings, there was a record entry of 30 players (members and guests) for the SJA’s return to Surbiton.

Special thanks go to Surbition social member David Emery for smoothing the arrangements, as well as all at the club. The prizes were presented by SJA chairman Barry Newcombe.
