Munich supplement wins Press Gazette award

A special supplement to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Manchester United’s Munich disaster has won a national regional press award for the Manchester Evening News, while one of the top entries in the SJA’s Sports Journalism Awards was again acclaimed for his work.

The Evening News took the Best Supplement award for its Munich Remembered, published in February, at the Press Gazette‘s Regional Press Awards, staged in London on Friday.

Jon Colman, of the Cumberland News, highly commended in the regional newspaper sportswriter award at the SJA Awards staged in March (beaten by Mike Aitken of the Edinburgh-based daily, The Scotsman), won the Press Gazette category for journalists working on weekly papers with circulations of less than 20,000.

Colman retained the title he had won in 2007 as his newspaper – an “unashamedly old-fashioned but sturdy piece of journalism”, according to the judges – picked up three prizes on the night, where northern newspapers did outstandingly well.

Other Press Gazette regional press award-winners were:

Sports Journalist of the Year (Daily/Sunday): John Gibson, Evening Chronicle, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Sports Photographer of the Year (Daily/Sunday): Stuart Boulton, The Nothern Echo
Sports Photographer of the Year (Weekly): Stephen Garnett, Craven Herald
