Hugh MacDonald, the Herald‘s chief sports writer, is leaving the title after 34 years to go freelance.

MacDonald’s decision follows that of Jonathan Jobson, the sports editor of the Sunday Herald, to take voluntary redundancy at Newsquest’s Herald and Times Group.
The departures are understood to be among 10 redundancies sought by management across their Glasgow-based titles.
In Edinburgh, there have also been a number of departures from the sports desks of the Johnston Press-owned rival Scotsman Publications.
Chief sports writer Stuart Bathgate is leaving The Scotsman after almost 22 years, sports editor Colin Leslie has left and rugby writer Bill Lothian is leaving the Edinburgh Evening News. Lothian had worked on the sports desk for 44 years.
It was announced last October that up to 45 jobs would go as the three Edinburgh titles merged their editorial staffs.
