David Chappell, the former sports editor at The Times, has been promoted to become the managing editor at the Wapping-based newspaper.
Chappell, a hockey specialist, originally joined The Times under Tom Clarke in 1986, from the Western Evening Herald in Plymouth. He was appointed sports editor in 1993.
He moved on to become deputy managing editor at the end of 2004, and has been acting managing editor since July, when Anne Ashworth vacated the post to become editor-in-chief of Times Online.
