A memorial service to celebrate the life of James Lawton will be held at St Bride’s, Fleet Street on Thursday 28 February (11.30am).
Lawton, one of the true greats of sports journalism – 1988 SJA Sports Writer of the Year, 2005 Columnist of the Year, SJA Feature Writer of the Year in 2006, and Sports Journalist of the Year in the British Press Awards in 2010 – died in September, aged 75.
He was chief sports writer of The Independent for 20 years after holding the same position at the Daily Express and also worked for the Daily Telegraph, and in Canada for the Vancouver Sun. He covered his first football World Cup in 1966 and travelled to his first Olympics in 1976.
