NCTJ goes it alone with sports course

The National Council for the Training of Journalists has launched a sports journalism distance learning course for qualified journalists.

The NCTJ says that its course, which has been devised without any consultation with or approval by the SJA, aims to cover the sports news cycle, press conferences, sports public affairs, politics, features, and subbing.

Dave King, the NCTJ’s chief examiner for sport journalism, claims that the course is “thorough and professional”.

King, the editor of the Swindon Advertiser, said, “It is a great opportunity for young journalists to get a first foot on the ladder of sports journalism.”

The course is £95 plus VAT, and available from the NCTJ. The course text – Sports Journalism, A Practical Introduction, by Phil Andrews – is included in the price, but is also sold separately for £21.99.
