AIPS election: Newcombe misses out

Barry Newcombe, chairman of the SJA, was unsuccessful in the elections to the executive committee to the AIPS – the international sports journalists’ association – staged at its Congress held in Beijing this week.

The Congress was attended by representatives of 90 countries. Newcombe polled 19 votes, as the internationally renowned sports journalist Al Malki Mohamed Abdulla, of Qatar, polled 57 votes, to win the ballot.

Coincidentally, AIPS President Gianni Merlo, of Italy, announced at the meeting a sponsorship deal with the Olympic Council of Asia. No details were given of the value of the sponsorship.

Earlier, Merlo decided to make a donation of $20,000 from AIPS funds towards relief effort for the Chinese earthquake.

Next year’s AIPS Congress will be held in Milan, with 2010 to be staged in Antalya, Turkey. The SJA is considering the possibility of offering to stage the 2012 Congress in London.
