Farnborough flies high at 60

The SJA is not the only body celebrating its 60th birthday this year. The Farnborough Air Show highlights its 60th year this weekend with special celebrations on the two days which are open to the general public.

Aircraft types which first flew at Farnborough in 1948 will take part in displays and there will be full scale replicas on display – the Avro Biplane from 1908, the Avro Triplane from 1910, the Cody flyer from 1908 and the Wright B Flyer of 1909.

SJA chairman Barry Newcombe said: “We will be celebrating our 60th in style on November 26th. My visit to Farnborough showed how interested visitors were in today’s newest passenger jets, headed by the Airbus 380.

“But at the end of the flying display the appearance of a lone Spitfire tracking low across the airfield was a magnificent reflection of the past. Our big day in November will be similar in theme – a tribute to our champions past and present and also to those members who inspired our Association’s formation.”
