British Sports Journalism Awards – entries now open

Entries are open for the 2008 SJA British Sports Journalism Awards, sponsored by UK Sport and Sky Bet.

The awards are open to all British sports writers, editors, columnists, cartoonists and photographers, in newspapers and magazines, in print and online, at regional as well as national titles.

Established over the last 30 years, these awards have seen Martin Samuel, of The Times, win the Sports Writer of the Year accolade for the past three years.

PA Sport’s Gareth Copley was the SJA’s British Sports Photographer of 2007, and this year – as he has discovered to his evident delight – he may also enter the Young Photographer of the Year category, as that award and the Young Sportswriter of the Year Award have been brought into line with an age limit of 30.

The SJA’s Sports Broadcasting awards are determined by a vote of the near-700-strong membership of the Sports Journalists’ Association of Great Britain, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Online voting for these awards is already open, click here.

The gala awards dinner at The Brewery in The City of London on March 9 will be the final, formal part of the SJA’s anniversary celebrations.

Entry forms, together with the SJA’s 2009 Yearbook and its Dec 2008 Bulletin, are being despatched by post to paid-up members this week.

Full details of the requirements for entry – which is also open to non-members of the SJA – have been posted here. Photographers need to print off an additional form, which is also available on this page.

Additional entry forms may be obtained by sending a large stamped , self-addressed envelope with a note outlining your request to Start2Finish Event Management, Unit 92, Capital Business Centre, 22 Carlton Road, South Croydon CR2 0BS.

Details of how to buy tickets for the event, plus a prompt list for the SJA Broadcast Awards, will be posted on this website in due course.

Entries in all categories must be submitted by January 9.

â–¡ UK Sport is the longest standing lead sponsor of the Sports Journalists’ Association, with a partnership that goes back more than a decade. Sky Bet are the SJA’s newest partners, the sponsorship being announced in October 2008.

Both partners support the SJA’s two prestigious annual awards events, including the presentation of a special UK Sport Award for excellence at the SJA’s Annual Sports Awards and the sports betting writer of the year at the SJA’s British Sports Journalism Awards.

The SJA Annual Sports Awards are the longest established of their kind in the United Kingdom, having been first staged in 1949. The 60th SJA Sports Awards were staged in London on November 26.
