Entries for SJA Sports Journalism awards now open

Sir Michael Parkinson makes the presentation to Martin Samuel, who has been named Sports Writer of the Year four times

Entry forms for the Sports Journalists’ Association 2011 British Sports Journalism Awards, including the British Sports Photography Awards, are now available online. Click here to access the forms. All SJA members have also been sent a set of entry forms in the post.

These awards are in their 35th consecutive year, and include the sought-after accolades of Sports Writer and Sports Photographer of the Year. The reigning champions are the Daily Mail‘s Martin Samuel and Laurence Griffiths, of Getty Images.

Also up for grabs from the SJA’s panel of expert judges is the SJA Sports Newspaper of the Year prize, which this year is sponsored by Laureus, the international sports charity.

The SJA Sports Journalism Awards have a range of categories, including specialist photographers, cartoonists, regional newspaper sports writers, Scoop of the Year (won last year by the News of the World), sports picture of the year, the SJA/Victor Chandler Sports Betting Writer of the Year, and internet sports writer of the year, among others.

Entries can be made by sports desks or picture desks, or by individual journalists. The deadline for entries is January 27. There is a discounted entry fee for SJA members, but entry is open to all sports journalists.

The organisers urge anyone who would like their work to be considered to make sure that they submit their work for judging, and don’t “just leave it to the desk to sort out”.

The winners in all categories will be announced at a gala dinner at the Grand Connaught Rooms on Monday, March 12. The ticket sales system – again with discounts for paid-up SJA members – will be announced shortly.

Entry forms are also available by sending a request together with a large, stamped addressed envelope to Start2Finish Events, Unit 92, Capital Business Centre, 22 Carlton Road, South Croydon, CR2 0BS.
