Basketball journalists look to work together

A new “trade body” has been launched within the UK sports media following the formation of the Basketball Journalists Association.

The original Basketball Writers Association existed for many years before fallling into abeyance around a decade ago but the new group will bid to offer professional journalists and broadcasters a channel for dialogue among themselves and with the myriad bodies involved in the British game.

“The idea of a flourishing membership base, glittering annual awards dinners, corporate discounts and regular goody bags from shoe companies to vie for our attention might be a while off,” said acting secretary Mark Woods.

“But in these times of reduced travel and budget cuts which have all but ended the concept of covering away games, this might also help to build networks to improve stories and knowledge to make our increasingly tough jobs that bit easier ” as well as, in return, trying to indirectly improve matters, media-wise, within the sport.”

An inaugural meeting will be staged at next month’s BBL play-off final in Birmingham for interested journalists to attend and help push the idea forward.
