Lawton takes What the Papers Say accolade

James Lawton, The Independent‘s feature writer and SJA member, won the sports writer of the year award at the What the Papers Say awards, staged at the Cafe Royal in London on Friday.

Martin Samuel, of The Times, and The Guardian‘s David Conn were among those considered for the television programme’s sports prize.

The newspaper of the year award went to the Financial Times.

Lawton’s work was first recognised by the SJA British Sports Journalism Awards nearly 20 years ago, when he was named Sports Writer of the Year in 1988. In 2006, he won the SJA’s sports columnist of the year award.
