Hubbard, the former Observer sports editor who has been the sports columnist and boxing writer for the Independent on Sunday for many years, received the Reg Gutteridge Award for “outstanding services to boxing journalism” from the London Ex-Boxers’ Association at a lunch last week.

Making the presentation was the former “Blond Bomber”, Billy Walker, whose heavyweight fights for the British and European titles, including a notable bout with Henry Cooper, Hubbard reported on in the 1960s.

In making the award, the ex-boxers’ group cited Hubbard’s coverage of the sport, amateur and professional, that had included 12 Olympic Gamess and world title fights from Atlanta to Zaire.
