Clayton confirmed as Mail’s head of sport

Lee Clayton has been confirmed as the new head of sport at the Daily Mail.

Staff were sent the news in an e-mail on Friday. Clayton takes over from Tim Jotischky, who is leaving to become deputy editor of the Sunday Telegraph next month.

Jotischky, who has previously worked as editor of the Scottish Daily Mail and Metro newspapers as well as being foreign editor and executive news editor of the Mail, replaces Dan Roberts, who left to join the Guardian as head of business.

Among Clayton’s first tasks in his new post will be to handle any job cuts demanded by management at Daily Mail & General Trust, the company that owns the Mail, Mail on Sunday, Evening Standard and Metro titles, where some 300 posts are expected to be cut.

Earlier this month, sportsjournalists.co.uk reported that the Standard had already axed three jobs on its sports desk, including chief sports reporter Ian Chadband.
