Let’s support newspapers, says Mail’s sports chief

It was sometimes an emotional night on Monday at the British Sports Journalism Awards at the Lancaster London, with passionate calls to support the newspaper industry made by Lee Clayton, the head of sport at the Daily Mail, the Sports Newspaper of the Year, and in praise of the fellowship among sports journalists from Paul Hayward, the winner of the Sports Writer award after a year in which he’d fought off life-threatening cancer.

And the highlight of the evening for many was the respect and admiration shown by the 450 guests at the BT Sport-sponsored event for Hugh McIlvanney, the six-time Sports Writer of the Year and recipient of a standing ovation and toast for his retirement, as proposed by the SJA President, Patrick Collins.

More videos from the awards evening, including other presentations, will be published soon.
