Adams carries the Torch for sports volunteers

Eighteen sports volunteers, headed by 83-year-old Peter Adams of Guildford who has served football in Surrey for more than 50 years, have been nominated for the 46th annual Torch Trophy Awards which will be presented by the Earl of Wessex in London on November 19.

Adams was a player, club and league administrator, referee and county official and has been president of Surrey FA since 1999.

The Torch Trophy awards are presented annually to nominees from sports governing bodies to recognise grass roots voluntary work for sport in clubs and community initiatives.

The other 2008 award winners are:
