Generously sponsored by The National Lottery, the SJA British Sports Awards are the country’s longest running annual celebration of the nation’s sporting achievement, with a history that goes all the way back to 1949.

In 2013, the winners of the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards were Wimbledon winner Andy Murray and track world champion Christine Ohuruogu, while rugby’s British and Irish Lions took the Team of the Year prize, and Aled Davies and Hannah Cockroft – a budding sports journalist herself – took the Bill McGowran Trophies for outstanding achievement in Paralympic sport.

The decision on the date and venue was taken at the May meeting of the SJA General Committee, and was based on the desire to keep ticket prices for our members, their guests and members of the public as low as possible.

Ticket prices for members for this prestigious event have not increased for five years – right through times of austerity.

The price includes a champagne reception and three-course lunch as well as entry to an event to be attended by many leading figures from British sport and the media.

  • For 2014 ticket prices remain at £72 (including VAT) for fully paid-up SJA members.
  • To encourage more members to bring along a partner or friend, we have cut the cost of an additional members’ ticket to £108 (including VAT).
  • For non-members of the SJA, 2014 tickets will cost £144 (including VAT) each.
  • A block booking for a table of 10 will cost £1,440 (including VAT).

Demand for tickets this year – with the Winter Olympics, football World Cup and Commonwealth Games featuring prominently –  is expected  to be high and early booking is recommended.

“The Connaught Rooms have proved to be a popular central London venue for our annual Sports Journalism Awards for the past three years, and the SJA and our partners, including sponsors The National Lottery and BT Sport, are looking forward to returning there for what has grown into a spectacular occasion,” said Randall Northam, the chairman of the SJA’s awards sub-committee.

“Our longest standing awards are chosen by a vote of the SJA membership, are are still regarded with pride as one of British sport’s top honours by our winners, who realise that journalists who cover sport week-in, week-out, really understand what it takes to win gold medals, championships and global titles.”
