Record traffic for SJA website – again

The SJA’s website, www.sportsjournalists.co.uk, in October broke its monthly record for site visitors for the third time in four months.

Your website had already enjoyed record months for traffic in July (686,391 hits from 47,000 unique visits), which was exceeded in September with 687,872 hits – the first time that the SJA site had attracted more than 50,000 UVs in a single calendar month.

Both months had surpassed even the traffic levels from August 2008, when the SJA’s activities attracted previously unprecedented interest during the Beijing Olympic Games.

But even before last month was over, October 2009 had set more records, generating an average of 24,000 hits every day of the month, with nearly three-quarters of a million hits over the course of the month. Finalised figures will be available on Nov 1.

Traffic was boosted mid-month when Roy Greenslade, in his Guardian media blog, followed up Norman Giller’s original article on News International’s pay-as-you-view plans for online sports coverage. The SJA’s website received more than 43,000 hits on one day alone as a consequence.

October also saw many SJA members visiting the website to cast their votes for the 61st SJA British Sports Awards.

But an increase in the number of news articles posted, more jobs articles being posted as vacancies begin to appear once again (12 new jobs have been highlighted by the SJA website’s jobs section this month), all coupled with use of the SJA’s Facebook page and a Twitter feed, together with regular email bulletins sent to a circulation list of more than 1,000 SJA members and other colleagues, has all contributed to the record traffic figures.

â–¡ Sky Bet is the SJA’s newest partner, the sponsorship being announced in October 2008.

Together with the SJA’s other lead sponsor, UK Sport, both partners support our two prestigious annual awards events, including the Sky Bet sports betting writer of the year at the SJA’s British Sports Journalism Awards.

The 61st annual SJA British Sports Awards will be staged at The Brewery, in London, on December 9 2009.
