Former Times football writer Stuart Jones has died

Stuart Jones, the former football correspondent of The Times, has died.

The Football Writers’ Association made the brief and sad announcement yesterday.

Jones was one of the sons of Peter Jones, the former BBC Radio sports correspondent, who died in 1990.

Stuart Jones covered football for The Times in the 1980s, working at three World Cups, before taking on the role as the paper’s tennis correspondent in the mid-1990s.

Jones spent much of his time recently living in Barbados, and after a diagnosis of throat cancer, he “kept the lowest of low profiles”, according to the FWA.

The SJA sends its sympathy and condolences to Jones’s family and friends.
