Ziegler honoured to run leg of Olympic torch relay

Martyn Ziegler, Press Association Sport’s chief reporter, will carry the Olympic torch for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

The International Olympic Committee wanted to involve a member of the British media in the torch relay as London 2012 will be the next Games after Vancouver, and it has chosen Ziegler in recognition of his long experience reporting on the Olympic movement.

The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will see Ziegeler take part in the February 9 leg from the Vancouver suburb of Surrey to Richmond, three days before the opening ceremony when the Olympic flame will be lit.

The physical demands should not be too tough: torchbearers need only be able to run 500 metres.

Ziegler said: “This is a fantastic opportunity and I am really looking forward to it.”
