Andrew McMenamin, the husband of SJA member Jayne Pearce who is working in Sochi for the Olympic Games press operations, and Gilles Delecourt, an AFP technician, both required treatment in a hospital intensive care unit following a car crash on the mountain road to Krasnaya Polyana on Sunday.
Early reports suggest that the car which was taking McMenamin and Delecourt to the venues for the Alpine skiing events collided in a tunnel with another vehicle whose driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
Sochi 2014 said witnesses saw a “fireball” in the tunnel where the accident happened.
The SJA officers and committee, on behalf of the Association, send their best wishes to McMenamin and Delecourt, their friends, colleagues and family, for a full recovery.
- According to the organisers, there will be nearly 2,900 members of the media working at the Sochi Olympics, of whom around 1,700 will be journalists from 66 countries.
