Wimbledon salutes Newcombe’s 50 years of service

Barry Newcombe: former SJA chairman, celebrating 50 years of Wimbledon coverage

Barry Newcombe, the former chairman of the Sports Journalists’ Association, was today honoured by the All England Lawn Tennis Club at Wimbledon after completing 50 years at the championships.

Newcombe began at Wimbledon in 1965 when he was tennis correspondent at the Evening Standard.

He has has missed only one year since.

Newcombe said: “They presented me with four large wine glasses, which will be put to good use.”
