Lawless funeral to take place in England

Terry Lawless, the former top-flight boxing manager who died following a gall bladder operation in Marbella on Christmas Eve, will now have his funeral in England.

His widow, Sylvia, contacted SJA member Norman Giller today with the news that Terry’s body will now be brought back to his east London roots. “I have been inundated with calls from Terry’s old friends in England,” she said. “I owe it to Terry and to all the people contacting me to bring him home for the funeral.

“Many of the calls have been from his former boxers and also sports writers, who were among his closest friends. They were all making arrangements to come here for the funeral, but that is not fair on them. My family is now making plans for an Essex funeral.”

The date pencilled in is Thursday January 7, but this has yet to be confirmed. We will post the definite date here as soon as we know for sure, because we know that many sportswriters will be planning to attend the farewell of a man who was always going out of his way to help journalists and photographers.
