The funeral service for David Welch, the former chairman of the awards committee of the Sports Journalists’ Association and Daily Telegraph sports editor, was held at Woodvale Crematorium, Brighton, yesterday.
The SJA was represented by its chairman Barry Newcombe, past chairman Peter Wilson and Jon Ryan, who was also a close colleague of Welch when sports editor of the Sunday Telegraph. From Start2Finish event management, who worked so closely with Welch on the staging of our awards events, was Martin Castle.
They were part of a full-house congregation, containing many other colleagues from the Telegraph as well as other media outlets, who heard a tribute from his son, Chris. There was also an address detailing Welch’s career which began on the Leicester Mercury. A reception followed in Lewes.
