Bill Bateson funeral details

The funeral for Bill Bateson, the former deputy chairman of the SJA who died this week, will be on Tuesday, October 6, at 2pm at Penmount Crematorium, near Truro, Cornwall.

UPDATED Monday September 28

There will be “one hell of a party afterwards to which we would love you all to come”, says Bill’s daughter, Sally Read. The wake is to be held in the Red Lion, Mawnan Smith, Bill’s local.

The family requests that no flowers be sent, but that donations should be sent, instead, to the MacMillan cancer charity. Donations can be collected at the crematorium or sent to:

Penryn & Falmouth Funeral Directors
50 Kernick Road
Penryn
Cornwall TR10 9DQ

Sally can also be contacted for further details on 07813 626308.

She says that she and her family have been touched by the tributes paid to her father.

“I have always been proud of my Dad, and known that he had some ‘Fleet Street legendary’ within, which has now been confirmed by all of these amazing comments, quotes and words. You have no idea how much this means to us, thank you,” she writes.

“The contacts book Jon Holmes mentioned is ‘here’ – the oldest contacts book in town, faded dark red cover, held together with an elastic band, loads of numbers crossed out and replaced and still containing names of folk long gone. But, it worked its magic last night as Fred Burcombe, who is here with us, managed to contact Dorothy, Dad’s long-suffering secretary at NoW, ‘good old Dot’.

“So many of you have called and visited over the last few months and Dad was so grateful and continually said how lucky he was to have such wonderful friends. I know that it’s nothing to do with luck.

“As well as having Fred here, I think David Norrie is on his way down this weekend. His regular, surprise visits over the last few months meant the world and again proved how very special my Dad was to people.

“He always told me he wasn’t a good Dad, never there at the weekends, always late home, always with his head stuck in the sports pages or glued to Match of the Day. I envy your working relationships with him, I’d love to have seen him in action, but never would I agree that he wasn’t a good Dad. He was the best and I loved him so much.”
