The Athletic recruit Telegraph’s Katie Whyatt as women’s football correspondent

The Athletic have appointed award-winning journalist Katie Whyatt as their new women’s football correspondent.

Whyatt, Bradford fan and highly commended in the student writer category at the SJA 2016 Sports Journalism Awards, made history when she became The Telegraph’s first full-time women’s football reporter two years ago, playing a pivotal role in the paper’s ground-breaking coverage of women’s sport.

The 23-year-old announced her October departure on Twitter, writing: “Some personal news… At the end of October, I’ll be leaving Telegraph Sport after two years to join @TheAthleticUK as their women’s football correspondent. Have had some really good experiences and learned lots from fantastic people – now looking forward to the next challenge.”

The Athletic has continued to recruit this summer, despite the pandemic’s effects on the sports journalism industry. They have recently advertised social media and desk editing jobs and have just celebrated their first year in the UK.
