People suspends sports editor over ‘irregularities’

The People has suspended its sports editor, Lee Horton, over alleged “financial irregularities”.

According to reports in The Guardian and Press Gazette, Trinity Mirror, the paper’s owner, has confirmed Horton’s suspension on full pay and said it was conducting an internal inquiry into the allegations of financial irregularities.

The company is understood to be investigating the possible misappropriation of a six-figure sum in false payments for stories.

A spokesman for Trinity Mirror said: “Lee Horton, sports editor, the People, has been suspended on full pay pending the conclusion of an internal investigation into financial irregularities.”
