Football commentary goes back to square one

Today is the 80th anniversary of the first football commentary on the wireless. The BBC is to mark the occasion with special 1920s-style coverage of Manchester United’s game against Arsenal on Radio 5 Sports Extra.

Guest summarisers will be singer David Gray (“Say hello, wave goodbye” to one side’s Premiership hopes?) and former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson. Reading out the numbers (“and it’s back to square one…”) will be James Alexander Gordon.
