David Bond standing down as BBC sports editor - Sports Journalists' Association

David Bond is leaving his job as BBC Sports Editor, it has been reported.

Bond has held the prestigious role since 2009, when he succeeded another SJA member, Mihir Bose.

The former sports editor of the Daily Telegraph, Bond had previously worked at the South London Press, Evening Standard and Sunday Times.

According to a report on the Daily Mail’s website, Bond is moving into public relations, joining the Milltown agency set up by former Royal spindoctor Paddy Harverson.

At a time of great upheaval across the BBC, inevitably Bond’s departure will raise speculation about the future of the Corporation-wide role of Sports Editor, which was created for Bose and has sought to deliver sports news on flagship television and radio bulletins such as the Today programme and 10 O’clock News with a similar status to politics and economics.

The Mail announced Bond’s departure, explaining that he wishes to reduce the amount of travelling he undertakes and time away from home, and quoting from an email to staff from Barbara Slater, head of BBC sport: “David has spearheaded our sports news coverage contributing to a step change in the quality, range and impact of our reporting.

“His professionalism, insight and commitment to the role has been demonstrated time and time again, not least during London 2012 in delivering many exclusive stories and agenda setting interviews. We are very sorry to see David leave.”
