Alton goes from Observer to sports Spectator

Roger Alton, once the chief sports sub at The Guardian and most recently Editor at The Observer, is to become the regular sports columnist of The Spectator magazine from today.

It will be Alton’s first journalism assignment since retiring from The Observer at the end of last year. The fortnightly column sees Alton take over the long-standing sport column from the retired Frank Keating, a long-standing SJA member and Alton’s former Guardian colleague.

Keating, 70, wrote the sport column for the Spectator from 2004 until last year.

“Frank Keating was there and he was the greatest – you can’t possibly be as good as that,” Alton told Guardian Unlimited.
