SJA2018 British Sports Awards: The case for Geraint Thomas

Voting is now open for the SJA2018 British Sports Awards sponsored by The National Lottery. As far as JON RYAN is concerned, there is only one contender for sportsman and that’s Geraint Thomas, winner of the Tour de France.

What a year for British cycling. You wait years for a Briton to win a Grand Tour then suddenly we have won all three in a year with Chris Froome (2017 sportsman of the year) in the Giro, Geraint Thomas in the Tour de France and Simon Yates in the Vuelta a España.

In a normal year Yates would have been my top choice but the manner and style of 32-year-old Geraint’s tour victory was something special.

He is proof that nice guys do come first. There is a tendency to think he has come from nowhere but he has won three world championships, two Olympic gold medals and now the Tour de France.

Chris Froome was wonderfully sporting to the teammate who got in the way of his winning a fifth tour. But then Thomas is that sort of unassuming and hugely talented guy and he was the deserved winner of the world’s toughest cycle race.

Proudly Welsh he is another sporting star from Whitchurch High School in Cardiff and a worthy Sportsman of the Year contender. Better luck next year Simon, at 26 time is on your side.
