It’s O Kay for Times football correspondent

Oliver Kay has been promoted by The Times to football correspondent.

The appointment follows the departure of chief football correspondent Martin Samuel, who is leaving to join the Daily Mail and The Times‘s recruitment of Paddy Barclay to the newly created post of chief football commentator.

Although Barclay will provide match coverage, it is understood that his main role will be comment columns, replacing Samuel’s regular Wednesday page, while Kay will deal with a reporting brief.

Barclay is joining the News International title as chief football commentator after working for the Sunday Telegraph for more than 12 years.

Kay’s appointment coincides with a planned re-design of The Times‘s Saturday editions in the new year, which will see the sports pages given their own separate section.
